Raymond DeShields

Raymond DeShields, a husband, father of three young children, and homeowner in Philadelphia felt very fortunate to purchase a home in 2005 for his family of five.

Two years in the home and the family faced devastating news as his wife of 14 years was diagnosed with breast cancer. As the sole breadwinner for his family, Raymond had often worked overtime to meet the family’s expenses. While his wife immediately began treatment to stop the cancer, Raymond gave up his overtime shifts to care for the children and tend to his wife. As a result, bills were neglected and over time, many bills became overdue including the mortgage.

At a loss as to what they needed to do to stay in their home and keep their lives intact, Raymond and his wife met with a CCCSDV counselor in late August of 2007. The DeShields were facing possible foreclosure on their home, primarily due to life events out of their control.

Their counselor, as all counselors do during a counseling session, walked the DeShields through a series of steps to evaluate their situation and determine the appropriate action steps. They developed a realistic budget together, discussed the reasons for default and decided on the best course of action. In this case, the solution was to seek assistance from HEMAP. Raymond was granted the assistance from HEMAP and able to get current on his mortgage.

In April 2008, 8 months after his initial housing counseling session, Raymond is pleased to report he is on track with his mortgage payment, has not been late on any payments and best of all, his wife is healthy again.

CCCSDV was pleased to honor Raymond on November 13, 2007 at its Annual Community Luncheon, A Credit to Great Philadelphia.
